Girl-guides

If you'd like to participate in some rewarding experiences with your daughter, grand-daughter or niece, Sparks ages 5 to 6, and Brownies ages 7 to 9, need unit leaders for the fall of 2014.

Girl Guides of Canada Commissioner for the Swift Current District, Betty Harris said, "All our leaders are moving up with their daughters to the next level. We're looking for more leaders because all our leaders are moving up and we will need help in the fall."

Sparks girls are encouraged to try a bit of everything and discover their individual skills, talents and interests. They make lots of new friends, begin earning badges and learn all kinds of new skills in a safe and fun environment.

Activities may include outings to a fire station, farmer's market or neighbourhood landmark, making multi-dimensional collages or creating a dance, bike safety, preparing healthy snacks, discovering the outdoors, and having sleepovers or going to a weekend camp.

Brownies encourages girls to develop their own identity and positive relationships with others.

They gain confidence by learning skills they can apply in their daily lives and develop a commitment to their communities through service projects and special events with programming in safety and healthy choices, science and technology, the arts and eco-awareness, and camping.

Volunteering with Girl Guides of Canada is a rewarding way to help girls and young women develop the best in themselves, providing them with skills to take them through life while offering fun and relevant programs.

Guiding also offers volunteers the opportunity to take advantage of personal and professional development through developing skills in areas such as leadership, event planning, advocacy, and communications as well as mentoring and training programs, international travel and post-secondary scholarships.

Former Girl Guide and current Sparks unit leader Ashley Schwartz has been involved for about sixteen years and said, "You get to do a lot of camping and crafts. The younger girls, with the Sparks and the Brownies, we do a lot more crafts and getting to know each other. We desperately need new leaders. If we don't have any people volunteering, we won't be able to run Sparks or Brownies in the fall of 2014."
