Highways are icy, snow covered and very slippery in the Swift Current area this afternoon, and have been wreaking havoc with travellers.

Corporal Heather Tarzwell of Swift Current Rural RCMP says police have had to close Hightway 4 south of Swift Current temporarily because of numerous accidents on that road this afternoon, and they are advising people to stay off of it and avoid it today and tonight.

Police say fire and emergency crews are on the scene and trying to respond to accidents as quickly as possible.

Tarzwell adds Highway 4 north of the city isn't much better and people are being advised to avoid that highway also.

The Trans-Canada Highway between Swift Current and Chaplin was also the scene of several accidents earlier today because of icy and slippery conditions.

Police say blowing snow which has iced over in sections, drifting and swirling snow, and reduced visibility is causing problems.

The Ministry of Highways has also issued a travel not recommended advisory on Highway 37 south of Gull Lake, with that highway icy, with loose, swirling, and drifting snow and reduced visibility.
