Last week, a collision between a semi and car on Thursday morning claimed the life of 27 year-old man from Swift Current.

Saskatchewan Highways says it will investigate the matter to determine whether safety improvements are needed along Highway 1. The accident happened at the Esso Truck Town intersection west of the city where several accidents have occurred over the years. Doug Wakabayashi with Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation says following the accident, they will investigate the collision site.

"Whenever a fatality occurs in the provincial highway system, certainly the RCMP does an investigation and reaches a conclusion regarding the major contributing factors, but once that is done we will also conduct our own internal investigation and look at the highway from an traffic engineering stand point to see if there is additional safety improvments that are warranted on the road," he said.

Wakabayashi adds there are ways to improve highway safety including the installation of radar speed signs.

"They are used from time to time and certainly on Highway 1 and in and around Swift Current we certainly would not rule anything out at this time. We have at some locations on Highway 1 used radar speed signs, which give a visual indication or a reminder to drivers about the speed they are travelling at. There are some other things we have done in other locations, for example, signs warning of high collision locations," he said.

Wakabayashi says there have been a number of Highway 1 safety improvements around Swift Current including turning lanes at the Transport City intersection, left and right turning lanes at the Lac Pelletier intersection, and overhead amber flashing signals. He adds, the ministry also listens to safety recommendations put forward by the municipality.
