A great turn out in Wymark this past weekend for the unveiling of a Centennial Memorial in honor of Swift Current Colony Mennonites.

The early Mennonites in the region contributed greatly to developments in the field of agriculture and growth in the Swift Current region, and multiple dignitaries were on hand for the event, including Swift Current MLA, Brad Wall.

Wall says that, in the future, he’d like to see Mennonite history more emphasized in school curriculums.

A stone memorial was unveiled, featuring plaques with the names of 20 of the original Mennonite villages in the Swift Current Colony written on them.

Peter Doerkson was one of those on hand for the unveiling. He says there is a great historical significance to this memorial.

An estimated 200 people showed up for the unveiling.
