Communities of Tomorrow released the first round of projects for the new Leveraged Municipal Innovation Fund.

Swift Current is one of fifteen municipalities helping fund the projects which aim to centralize research they were doing on their own.

Communities of Tomorrow spokesman Michael Zaplitny says some of their first projects include discovering new techniques for dealing with potholes and recycling asphalt. They are also researching the best possible mixes of sand and salt for city streets during the winter.

"The ultimate result should be better practices that either cost less for the municipality or create work that lasts longer," Zaplitny said.

He expects some results in six to eight months.
