A cancer screening program is expanding to our region

A new colorectal cancer screening program is now available in the southwest.

But how do you know if you qualify?

"There is a website through the cancer agency," said Cypress Health Region Director of Occupational Health and Safety Jeff Schwan. "There is a targeted age group that they will be identifying and sending those packages directly to homes and physicians."

The advanced fecal immunochemical tests can be completed in the privacy of your home.

"This is a very important initiative," Schwan said. "It will signify if (those screened) will need to have further testing done."

The program got a recent $4 million funding boost from the provincial budget.

As of February 2012, approximately 52,000 people had been invited to participate in the program in other parts of the province. It is now expanding into our region.

Last year 270 people in Saskatchewan died as a result of colorectal cancer.
