The only game in the NHL playoffs Friday night saw the Phoenix Coyotes draw closer to their first Western Conference final.
Shane Doan scored in the first period, and that would hold up to be the game winner, as the Phoenix Coyotes beat Nashville 1-0 to take a 3-1 series lead in the Western Conference semi-final. Goalie Mike Smith made 25 saves for the shutout.
The Coyotes can finish off the Predators with a win at home on Monday.
There's just one game in the playoffs today as Washington hosts New York (10:30am, CBC). The Rangers have a 2-1 lead in the Eastern Conference semi-final.
Brendan Leipsic scored twice and Troy Rutkowski had a couple of assists as the Portland Winterhawks beat Edmonton 5-1 in game two of the WHL's Ed Chynoweth Cup Final. The Oil Kings have only lost twice in their last 26 games dating back to the regular season. The series is tied up at a game apiece with game three set for Sunday in Portland.
Team Canada has a big game against the USA in round-robin action at the World Hockey Championships this morning (10:00am, TSN). Forward Alex Burrows is questionable for today's game, after he suffered an apparent concussion in Canada's 3-2 win over Slovakia in yesterday's tournament opener.
The Humboldt Broncos host a strong field in the RBC Cup National Junior A Hockey Championship. The SJHL and ANAVET Cup Champs take on the Woodstock Slammers from Ontario tonight, while the BCHL's Penticton Vees battle the Soo Thunderbirds in the opener this afternoon. The Portage Terriers from the MJHL round out the five-team tournament and begin play tomorrow.
