The power grid system in southwest Saskatchewan is due to be upgraded and that was the reason for an open house hosted by SaskPower in Swift Current on Wednesday.

Bernie Bolen is the Supervisor of Environment Issues Management for SaskPower and says the current 72 kilovolt system has been in place for over 50 years.  Trans-Canada Corporation is looking at pumping station expansions in the next couple years also and will need increased voltage for that as well.

Bolen says the new transmission lines will cover a large area:

Bolen adds projects of this size always involve a number of municipalities, land owners, towns, and villages and they want to get as much feedback as possible and look at all options available.

SaskPower hopes to have a route that will work for the project by the end of 2011, but construction on it is not scheduled to begin until 2013.
