There was a large gathering of interested parties out yesterday for a 'Lunch N' Learn' on the federal government's proposed tax changes.

Over 200 people were in attendance for the event that was hosted in the gym at Walker Place. The event was initially planned for Houston Pizza, but the Swift Current & District Chamber of Commerce received an 'overwhelming response,' forcing them to shift the venue.

"I think (the turnout) is a testament to the entrepreneurship and business community in Swift Current. The proposed tax legislation changes are very far-reaching and impact both small business owners and farming families," Chamber CEO Karla Wiens said. "It's very important to educate yourself so you can make your voice heard and hopefully impact some change with the government's proposed changes."

The educational part of the event was presented by MNP who partnered with the chamber to host the event and make a detailed presentation to those in attendance outlining who and what the changes will impact.

"We partnered (with MNP) because this is an important educational piece for our members," Wiens explained. "We also to advocate on the behalf of our members, especially when there is an issue that strikes this close to home for the business community."

The chamber has also prepared draft letters addressed to Public Safety Minister, and lone Saskatchewan Liberal MP, Ralph Goodale, Finance Minister Bill Morneau, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau asking for an extension to the consultation period which currently ends on October 2.

Recently Morneau said that the Liberals are open to changes to the tax proposals and Trudeau says the proposals circulated by Morneau were meant for discussion and the final legislation will take that into account.
