October is Canadian Autism Awareness Month and the Autism Society of Canada and the Saskatchewan Families for Effective Autism Treatment (Sask FEAT) are working to build awareness of the condition.

"Autism is a neurological disorder that affects the way the brain functions, resulting in difficulties with communication and social interactions... Individuals on the Autism spectrum will depend on life-long supports and services," said Arden Fiala, President of Sask FEAT and the Saskatchewan Director and Vice President of the Autism Society of Canada.

One in every 68 people born will be affected with Austism Spectrum Disorder, and currently 515,000 Canadians are living with this disorder.

Fiala says awareness is the key in making informed decisions and finding the support needed for patients and their families.

"Right now, Sask FEAT has been advocating for equal access to services that are evidence-based and delivered by qualified professionals," she added. "Building awareness about Autism Spectrum disorders is the start, then it builds to understanding, which will then affect the supports and services that are needed for all individuals in this province with Autism."
