The winter weather came in like a lion over the past week which was a shock to many after the milder weather we were experiencing early this month.

But, according to Environment Canada Senior Climatoliogist David Phillips, this early cold snap shouldn't last much longer.

"A week from now, temperatures will be above the freezing mark," Phillips said. "You will be back into - not quite as balmy as you had - but certainly it will be nice to have some sunshine with temperatures above the freezing mark. It is just this time of year, it is early for this cold and it doesn't necessarily mean it is going to be a winter of that.

"We think winter will not be as tough as last winter, we think it will be kind of normal even milder than normal but not nearly as long and as cold as it was last year," he added. "Don't think because it started early it is going to stay that way."

Philips adds we should also see some melting temperatures as well as some nice days ahead before the hard winter weather sets in.

Swift Current is to see a high of -10 today with wind chill factors in the minus 20s again, but temperatures are expected to warm up through this week. For more local forecast details, click the Local Weather link on Swift Current Online.
